About Huaqiao University
Huaqiao University, established in 1960 under Premier Zhou Enlai’s
kind concern, is a national comprehensive university catering for
students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan as well as overseas Chinese
students. The University is located in the golden delta of South
Fujian with campuses in Quanzhou and Xiamen. Under the direct
leadership of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office under the State
Council, it is a university given priority in construction by the
Chinese government and one of universities rated “excellence” in
the Assessment of Undergraduate Education Level conducted by the
Chinese Ministry of Education. It is also a major base for China
to develop the overseas education of the Chinese language and
culture.
The University has a board of trustees with the president
shouldering overall responsibility. Mr. Liao Chengzhi, the late
Vice Chairman of NPC Standing Committee served as the first
president. The current president is Prof. Wu Chengye, member of
CPPCC and advisor for PhD candidates. The board of trustees is
made up of overseas Chinese, Hong Kong and Macao compatriots,
returned overseas Chinese, celebrities from all walks and
government leaders at all levels. Based on the school policy of
“orienting to overseas, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and the economic
zones in the west bank of the Straits”, the original purpose of
founding the University is “serving the overseas Chinese and
spreading the Chinese culture”, and the idea of “Cultivating
students who thoroughly understand China and the world, and are
with both lofty virtue and high-level professional competence”.
With a unique feature of “one school with two types of students,
who are educated according to their aptitude”, Huaqiao University
has a campus culture of “one dominating traditional culture mixed
with others", and a campus spirit of “Toleration is the best
policy. Be affable but not adulatory”.
